Mark Alfrey was born in 1969 and grew up in a suburb of New Jersey. Though his first passion was collecting swamp critters from the local pond, creative inspiration came to him around age 8 when he saw the 1933 film “King Kong” and wondered how it was made. His interest became an obsession which led him straight from high school to a career in movies. His first movie job was the 1988 cult horror sequel “Critters 2”. Through the late 80’s he assisted Jersey based artist John Dods on a number of film, tv and Broadway productions. In 1995 he moved to Los Angeles where he continued his freelance career as a special effects artist, mainly recognized as a sculptor. Some of his more notable projects were Men in Black 1 & 2, From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet of the Apes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Nip/Tuck, Babylon 5, X-Files and some initial design work on 300. His work also graces the album covers of Marilyn Manson’s Mechanical Animals and AC/DC’s Stiff Upper Lip. Alfrey later produced a series of highly sought after instructional dvds covering various processes of sculpture, mold making and life casting. Recently, Alfrey left the movies to explore a career in pop art.
